A rich gaming environment inspired by Nordic mythology is the scene of an adventure packed with battles against various enemies, finding passageways and avoiding deadly traps. The action goes on through eleven comprehensive stages that span various part of Loki’s kingdom. Subterranean caves full of lethal traps and volcanic gorges teeming with treacherous creatures are interlaced with labyrinths where switches and transitions prevent simple advancement. Gigantic temples populated by giants who swing the axe as easily as the mammoth hammer are an arena where quick reflexes are the only way to win. In the end, Thorgal faces the formidable task of liberating his family and taking on Loki.

Throughout the eleven stages Thorgal gets guidance from Odin, who takes on the form of a talkative crow. He is also helped by other gods whose gifts restore his energy or confer on him an extra life. If Thorgal finds the key, he is given passage to a bonus level where Thor gives him magical weaponry and heroic capabilities.
